Quebrada de Allane (Allane Canyon) and Tacora Volcano
Nestled way up in the 15th Region a couple of hours from the Peruvian border and close to the Chilean altiplano’s northernmost reach, one can find the closest thing Chile has to the Grand Canyon in the United States. Allane Canyon (Quebrada de Allane) is not even close to the same but it is still quite large and colorful, with a decent little river running through it. The road surface is still very high, well over 4,000 meters and at points near 4,600 meters (15,091 feet). Heading out of Putre toward the Bolivian border, for about 20 minutes, follow the signs and turn left on the dirt road that goes towards Visviri. You will climb to around 4,900 meters (even though the road sign says 5,250 meters), and as you go down the other side you will find Quebrada de Allane.
Rest assured, very few Chileans, let alone foreigners, ever make it
