Ever drive through the endless fields of sunflowers, wheat and corn in Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Montana, the Dakotas, Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana, rural Illinois, etc.? Do you remember how pleasant all those acres of crops seemed at first and then how boredom set in after enduring the sight for several hours? There is no longer drive than Butte or Denver to Pittsburgh. Come to think of it, driving from Mendoza to Buenos Aires, Argentina is pretty bad too, and I bet anyone driving the wide part of Brazil would likewise be nonplussed. So a lot of places have boring drives.
The northern Chilean (desert) coastline creates a similar impression, in which a driver, or (worse yet) a bus passenger, must endure 1,642 kilometers (1,020 miles) of largely stark, barren coastline.
