Prepared To Succeed 1: Emigration Is NOT For Wimps

Home – What does it really mean?

For some of us, it’s where we grew up. No matter where we go, whenever we return to the place of our youth, we just feel comfortable. And there’s a longing to return.

For others, it’s more about people. No matter where your family is, this is home. Maybe your focus is on your parents. Just being around them is “home” to you. Or maybe it’s your children or grandchildren that mark the place you call home.

For us, “home” kind of disappeared. We grew up in Phoenix, but after we left and moved around for fifteen years, it changed so much that it lost its familiarity. Places we used to relate to have changed or been rebuilt or completely replaced altogether.

100_3277Our sons married and started their own families. One’s in a location we’re unfamiliar with. The other is in one that’s familiar, but it’s still not home. The only reason we have a desire to go there is to visit them and see our grandchildren.

As we’ve reflected over the past year or so, for us, we really don’t have a place we call “home.” Our house is home in some ways, though we’re not that attached to it. So there is a certain sense in which we’re homeless. This realization has helped solidify our desire to expatriate.

When it comes to emigrating from your “home” country, everyone’s reasons are different. It can be anything from removing yourself from a tyrannical government to a simple desire for change. But the focus, in this case, is on what you’re leaving.

In a sense, this is the easy part. Sure, you’ll have the emotional challenges of leaving behind loved ones. But, in your desire to go, you’ve likely already weighed this factor and decided that it’s worth it.

On that note – make sure you’ve weighed it well. At first, the sense of adventure and excitement can outweigh the concerns over leaving your friends and family. However, after one, two or three years away, the longing can sometimes be overwhelming.

For us, part of the reason we wanted to explore opportunities abroad was to offer our sons and grandchildren more options. Let’s face it; things aren’t getting better in the US. Most western countries seem to be deteriorating from within as values degrade, economies are stalled or on their way downhill and freedoms are being systematically reduced.

100_2612Most of you can relate to this to some degree. So you begin dreaming, making plans and starting your research.
