Weather: It Matters – Viña del Mar Tops the List
When we’re looking for places to visit, especially if we consider them to be possible expatriation destinations, there are several criteria we consider. Some of these include basic freedom, property rights, the economy, tax structures, safety and modern conveniences.
Depending upon your circumstances, another major factor might be climate. While there are things to be said for hot climates, such as mild winters and long growing seasons (if you have enough water), the heat can wear on us after a while. The same can be said for colder regions, with such challenges as freezing pipes, shoveling snow and rust-promoting salt being included in the list.
Some folks thrive in these climates, and wouldn’t want anything different. This article isn’t for you.
A lot of us prefer a more temperate climate, where the annual variance in temperatures is only about 20 degrees F. We find these temperatures at higher elevations along the equator and in pockets around the globe where the weather patterns are just right. Usually, if it’s warm enough, it’s too humid. If it’s cool enough, it gets too cold in the winters.
This can especially be an issue if one has health concerns. And while such concerns don’t really cross our minds much in our youth, as we get older we begin to notice that the climate affects us more. And such chronic challenges as arthritis, breathing disorders and other challenges can be affected heavily by both climatic factors and weather patterns.
In an effort to discern where the most comfortable places in the world are, Ed Darack listed some basic factors that affect our comfort and ability thrive. Among these are included:
- Low winds, but therapeutic breezes
- Well regulated humidity, close to 50%
- Number of days with full sunshine
- Optimal temperatures averaging around 68 degrees F
