Day 273 of 1827: It Finally Happened

Day 273 of 1827: It Finally Happened

Tonight marked a major milestone in my Spanish development!

So, remember the other day I met an expat-to-be and had an extended conversation in Spanish?

You don’t?  That’s ok; I linked to the blog post in that last paragraph so that you can go back and read it.

No, please — go ahead; I’ll wait.

Wasn’t that fun?  Ok, moving on….

So I met up with her again this evening.  We were going to grab coffee at a Starbucks near Conectas, but apparently everyone else in the city had the same idea (as usual).  So we tried the Juan Valdez around the corner… same story.

Well.  No sense wandering around Providencia; I’ve tried that before, and it doesn’t work.

Anyway, there’s a few coffee shops on Isidora Goyenechea that I haven’t been to in awhile — off to the El Golf area!

We checked in at the local Starbucks (What?  I like their music!), grabbed some coffee and sat down to chat.

The conversation lasted 3 hours, and it only stopped because the café was closing for the night, and they had to kick us out.

Now, normally by this time, my Spanish has shut itself off for the day.  My brain is just too tired after a long workday to focus on interpreting a foreign language.

But tonight, something very interesting happened.

We walked back to my apartment and continued the conversation (still in Spanish) for another hour.

And you know, I think I could have gone all night with her.  But she still has a lot to do to get ready for her upcoming move, so we had to stop.

After she left, something else very interesting happened.

For the rest of the night, I was thinking in Spanish!

Granted, I’ve done that before — but it’s always been on purpose.  Whenever I feel like practicing my Spanish and don’t have a conversation partner around, I’ll try to translate my thoughts.

But this was the first time it happened on its own!

Tonight was such an amazing night.  I’m really going to miss her when she goes.

Paracaidismo!
It’s such a great feeling when everything “just works”.
I bet this skydiver would agree.
